Troubleshooting
Run atgent doctor first. It checks the runner, Gmail and each agent, and it sends no mail. Its message appears below.
Gmail
No Gmail app password found.
The runner found neither AGENT_MAILBOX_PASSWORD nor a password_command. Add password_command to your config so the password comes from your keychain, then run doctor again. Gmail sign-in shows the line to add.
password_command failed.
The command in your config did not run. Run it yourself in Terminal. It should print the app password and nothing else. On macOS, this reads a Keychain item named atgent:
Gmail: sign-in refused.
Gmail rejected the password. Check that IMAP is on in Gmail settings. App passwords stop working when you change your Google password, so create a new one and store it again.
Gmail is authenticated, and the trusted Sent folder is available.
The runner can read your Sent folder. The next line should read SMTP authenticated; no email sent.
The runner
Runner: STOPPED
Nothing is reading your mail, so tasks wait in Sent until the runner starts. Install the login service so it starts after you sign in and restarts after a failure.
Automatic startup is installed, but the runner is stopped.
The service is registered but the runner is not running. Check the service, then read state/service.log beside your config for the last error.
I sent a task and nothing came back.
The first successful check skips old Sent mail. A task sent before Mailbox intake armed; runner ready appeared in the log is skipped. Send it again. Also check that the subject starts with Codex: or Claude: and that it went to your +agents address.
Agents
codex: unavailable or claude: unavailable
The agent did not answer its version check, is not installed, or timed out. Install it and sign in, or fix its command in the config. Doctor exits with an error until every configured agent passes. A passing check does not prove the agent is signed in or has capacity left.
The turn ended as needs_review.
Claude Code denied an action that needed approval, and the reply lists each denied call. Completed work is kept. Send a follow-up, turn on approval emails, or widen the project's permissions.
Still stuck
Email support with the output of atgent doctor and atgent status. Remove addresses and task text first. Support has the address.
