Getting started

Install the runner on the computer that has your projects. Then email yourself a task from any device.

What you need

  • A Gmail or Google Workspace account with IMAP turned on.
  • macOS or Linux, Python 3.11 or later, and uv.
  • Codex or Claude Code, installed and signed in. Claude Code needs version 2.1.259 or later.
  • A computer that stays awake and online while tasks run.

Set it up

  1. Install

    Install the runner with uv.

    uv tool install atgent
  2. Create the config

Guided setup asks for your Gmail address, how the runner signs in, your project folders and your agents. It writes no secret to the config.

    atgent init
  3. Give it Gmail access

Create a Google app password and keep it in your keychain. Gmail sign-in has the steps, and the OAuth option for accounts that block app passwords.

  4. Check

Doctor checks Gmail over IMAP and SMTP without sending mail, then checks each agent.

    atgent doctor
  5. Start at login

The login service starts the runner after you sign in and restarts it after a failure.

    atgent install-service
Note

Wait for the runner before the first email.

The first successful check skips old Sent mail. Send your first task after Mailbox intake armed; runner ready appears in state/service.log beside your config.

Send a task

Send mail from your own Gmail to your own address with +agents added. The subject names the agent. The body is the task.

Subject: Codex: improve the signup form

Find the confusing parts of the signup form, improve them,
and run the relevant checks.

You get Queued, Started and the result in the same thread. Reply to continue the same session. Reply status for progress or stop to stop the task. The subject line table lists every form.
